Make a Relocation Resumé

Think of this exercise as a simple decluttering process to help you adjust.

When you move a lot you become expert at keeping things together

I came up with the Relocation Resumé to provide movers an opportunity to reflect on all the ground they’ve covered, while simultaneously creating a quiet, safe and simple way to make their invisible work more visible to them. This exercise helps when an adjustment to a move feels stuck or overwhelming.

By stating each move you’ve made concisely, without narrative explanation and without extra detail, you will be able to tease out themes. For instance, the first time I did this exercise I felt a deep exhaustion. I had finally found a way to unpack the essence of all the moving my soul and body had experienced. It was a wonderful release and afterwards I felt so grounded.

Think of this exercise as a simple decluttering process designed to free space for you so that you can restore yourself and reset where you are in this moment, not where you used to be, long to be, or might one day be.

Craft a new version of your Relocation Resumé whenever you like.

It’s remarkable how the reflections will evolve over time, so you may want to keep these tucked into a notebook or journal for easy access. In time your story will start to be clear to you and from there you can use all kinds of approaches to craft your Relocation Resume.
